An Audience of One
The creative person arranges a display of flowers
in a pleasing manner.
Yellow mums, a touch of morning glory's in a brilliant
bursting forth of orange and gold.
All is laid and positioned to just the right backdrop
of twisted and feathered green leaves
with just a touch of earthen branches lending its
straightforward support to the whole magnificent array
of color.

There are eight chairs scattered in a haphazard manner in the foyer
and some people lean against the wall while others sit in the
straight-back chairs that are provided as they wait for the next
part of the seminar to begin.

Well, as happenstance would have it there is
not much to look at in this tiny round hallway, and gradually a person's
eyes will alight on the round brown table hosting the blue tinted transparent
glass vase with the wide full bottom and the tight curvy top which is exploding
with these vibrant firery colors.

Now, the person who created this scene took delight in her artistic form
and the people sitting in the hallway are entertained by a pretty picture.

Now, my question is this.

The writer writes her story and it is good.

It has a beginning, a middle and an end.

She puts pen to paper, or nowadays taps fingers to computer
and creates a piece of art.

Soon she closes her notebook and puts it away;
or she turns off her computer and closes the cover.

There is nobody to appreciate her piece or work.

Nobody to measure the breadth and depth of her story.

I ask you in earnest is there not someone there?

And I ask you again does that story hold the same quality and
beauty as the vase and its flowers.

Are they both not equal in their own right?

Then the question is - should the writer stop writing,
because she thinks she has no audience for her writing,
or is the true creativeness in the sheer
energy of breathing the story, forming the story, and giving
it life.

But then I have come to hold another answer.
And I am afraid to say it out loud,
because I don't know where it will lead.

There is an audience
All be it an Audience of One.

The audience for the vase and its flowers,
The audience for the writer and her story
is from whence it came.

The I who formed the story
she is the audience.
The Audience of One.
