She had died. I had knelt on the sand in Bermuda and wept over her body, and now she was standing at my door, with She had died. I had knelt on the sand in Bermuda and wept over her body, and now she was standing at my door, with a smile of amusement or malevolence – I couldn’t tell. And then she said.............
God, why have you forsaken me she raged.
Lucy's mind ran through a checklist of all the things god had done to her and if anyone had a right to rant and rave
At god it was her.
She was 14 now. And she should be in high school a sophomore with her friends, but no here she was stuck in
Some godforsaken town in texas that her mother had brought
Her and her brother to and as her mother had put it, it was a new beginning for all of them.
"New beginning, my ass," Lucy mused.
Her mom just was thinking of herself as usual.
Lucy remembered how her mother came home from work and broke the news to her and her brother.
Her mother Irene was sitting down at the kitchen
Table in their third story walkup in Manhattan and out of the blue says
,
"Lucy and Tom come here. We have to talk."
Tom who was only eight and was busy with his video games
And complained, "Mom, can't it wait. I am just about
To kill tony the golfer and if I don't do this right
The ball will land in the pond."
Lucy's mother groaned and rolled her eyes.
"Tom, you are only eight, you shouldn't be spending all your time on that game."
"But mom, i am hooked up to the internet with jimmy from Iowa and we are playing this championship. I told you about It this morning."
His mother rubbed her forehead and then
Proceeded to take off her glasses.
She put her right hand through her long red hair twirling the ends before she responded.
"OK, you have one hour and that's it."
Lucy meanwhile wondered what her mother was up to.
She had come home from school and seen the old brown
Suitcase on her mother's bed and clothes had been pulled
Out of the closet and were tossed half in and half out of the suitcase.
"Something was definitely up Lucy mused, but never in her 14 years would she have thought her mother would have
Pulled this on them.
After an hour with her mother fidgeting around reading the
Local newspaper and getting up and down drinking tea the
Three assembled around the kitchen table.
"Well, i didn't finish the competition tom said.
I guess I am not good enought yet.
Lucy gave him one of her rolled up eyes sick look and moaned, "poor tom, you'll never make a golfer."
"Shut up Lucy, you don't know anything about it."
"Well, obviously neither do you," retorted his sister.
Lucy turned to her mother.
"All right, mom, out with it what is this earthshattering news that you have to tell us."
Well, Lucy honey, tom, remember that job I was offered in Texas teaching at a remote town where they can't get anyone qualified to come and help them. Well, i have decided to take the job. We are moving to Texas.
Irene knew it would be bad, but she didn't expect what
Happened next.
Lucy stood up hands on her hips blue eyes blazing. "You expect me to move to some godforsaken town that is not even on the map.
Tom's eyes were blinking real fast and he started to stammer, mom, you can't be serious." a smile of amusement or malevolence – I couldn’t tell. And then she said.............
